For those of you who are running some of the BOINC projects on your computers and especially for those who have joined our own group, here is some inspiration. Our numbers are looking quite good!
http://www.boincstats.com/stats/boinc_team_graph.php?pr=bo&a mp;id=53368
And for those still wondering whether you should get involved - please do so. It is in the interest of science, does not cost you anything and also does not require you to do much. If you can reach thenewRadiant, then you can join BOINC: all it needs is a PC, an internet connection (to fetch work and report results) and downloading some software (small).
Please ask questions from those who are already involved - we'll gladly assist.

Those certainly are impressive stats! We have accumulated more credit than almost 98% of all teams, and still climbing (or should I say lowering? because lower is better) in World position!
WAY TO GO TEAM!
And yes, a few more members joining in will only help those stats.

For those who are still not involved in SETI@home or any other distributed computer projects through BOINC, here's some more "inspiration". I came across this article on a recent surfing trip across the internet and thought I'd share. Of course, if you still have any questions or doubts about these projects after you read the article, feel free to ask questions. Some of us here run these projects and would be more than glad to answer any questions we can (as Lee has stated above).

I had stopped running BOINC on my home computer probably around christmas time. I'm not sure why I still show as active. The projects I was running were not stopping when I was using the computer as they should, and were slowing my surfing speed tremendously. SETI was the biggest culprit, and I had read somewhere that they had changed the way the program runs on a users computer. It got to the point where I was running at about dial-up speed, and I have a high speed DSL connection through my ISP. I still think the projects are worthy, but it wasn't worth the trade off of slowing my computer down. My dad had the same problem and he stopped rnning it as well. It is also worth noting that I did not change any settings when this all started happening. Sorry guys, hope you are not too disappointed.

Hi Corey - I am still active, but have been thinking maybe BOINC could be the reason for my programmes also slowing down - so I do understand your frustration. I disable it from time to time... I was not even sure how many units I have crunched now until I specially checked. Seems my total is up to 312,364 and I am close to finishing a large unit, so I'll let that finish and perhaps sthen uninstall and install again later...
Some of the programming seems to be less efficient than it is supposed to be.

They changed the way the client acts when the computer is in use. It used to shut down completely, now it throttles back, and you can adjust how much it uses when the computer is in use. I will find the setting and post how it is done later.

To control when BOINC is allowed to run and how much it RAM and network bandwodth it uses you have to be in the advanced control mode. If you are using the simple control click on the word "advanced" and it will open int the advanced mode. When you are in the advanced mode click on "preferences at the top or the screen and a window will open the first tab it opens in is where you can tell it to not work when the computer is active.
The next tab controls how BOINC can access the network...you can tell it how much bandwidth to use...and even tel it which hours it can acces the network.
The last tab allows you to select how much RAM and disk space BOINC can use...and the RAM usage can be set for when the computer is active and when it is idle. Let me know if you need any further clarification.

Hi Don, I've done all that and the usage has been "frugal" - yet somehow it still seems to interfere somehow and I find I need to suspend it quite often completely.
I don't use it on my laptop at all any longer, mainly because the laptop uses the extremely resources-hungy Vista and as far as my desktop is concerned, I do find that the machine seems a bit faster when Boinc is completely disabled.
I've been enthusiastic throughout, so I won't abandon for good, but something is not quite right somewhere...

I haven't noticed any problems...but I will investigate and see if this beast is slower with BOINC disabled.

I see what Lee is talking about. This beast runs better with BOINC disabled...subtle but noticeable. I am debating whether to re-enable it or not. Right now it is set to get no more work.

I did not see any difference with surfing...but it did lag when trying to run other large apps...like photoshop.

I'm trying an experiment. I have a dual processor system and I am telling BOINC to only run on one processor at a time. I will report what this is like in a few days.

There is a new version of the BOINC Manager and if you do not check the option to "While Computer is in Use" The only time the projects will even be loaded is when the computer is idle...even just looking at the BOINC Manager counts as computer usage. This feels exactly like BOINC is not running.

Hey Don, et al,
Yes, I think I'm back. I was down for a while due computer blowupage, but I finally got everything fixed.......I think.
As a thought, another thing you can do, it's a minor pain in the butt, but when you start using the computer, just to to the manager and suspend it for the duration. Then just before you are done, you can reinstate it.
BTW, can you do me a favor, and check to make sure I'm on the New Radiant team. I'm pretty sure I am and have been all along, but I just want to make sure and I can't seem to sign in and for whatever reason it doesn't want to send me my signin info.
Thanks, Ken B. :D

Interested in BOINC or SETI. I have my own laptop now, first time my own computer. (Old desktop is dying slowly.) I am still getting used to my new laptop, but interested in joining the above. Note: due to my Search And Rescue work, laptop will most likely go with me onsite.
Some advice to joining the above to work with a computer that is not always hooked into it...much appreciated. I have a good computer, wish to use it to the max, also want to know if BOINC and / or SETI slows down computer. I have just gotten used to FAST and loving it. Again, advice appreciated! ! ~ Robin

Hi Robin, As long as your laptop is connected to the internet every once in a while...it will do just fine.
If you have BOINC set to only do work while you are not working you will not even notice it is working...but that also means that it needs to be on most of the time... and (I think) not sleeping or on stand by. If it is a fast computer you will only notice a slight lag if it does work while the computer is active. I am waiting to see how much my RAC (Recent Average Credit) goes down with BOINC only running while computer is not active. If it is a big difference I will let BOINC work while I am using the computer, as thi beast is fast enough that it is not a big difference.
Goto http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php for info on how to join and setup BOINC. If you need mpor info either post here or email me.

Thanks for the advice, Don ~ just one more question for now. The older desktop is still hooked up and runs (though growls at times!). If I should for instance sign up for BOINC on the old computer and use that for pretty much BOINC only...would I have to resign up later with my new laptop computer? And, would credits toward work done be transferred over to my laptop? Just curious as a Kat! ~ Robin

If you want to run both computers...sign up with one and then add the second by downloading the software for it and when you add the projects to it use the login and password for the other...each computer will have its own credits and you will also have credits for both under the user name.

Right now my RAC is about 20-30% lower with BOINC only running when the computer is idle...that is acceptable so I will leave it set as it is...
